This Number 62 low angle jack plane is the perfect tool for to smooth, flatten and joint boards. It excels at trimming end grain This low angle jack plane is ideal for the cabinet maker and discerning woodworker. The body is made from nearly indestructible stress-relieved ductile cast iron. The sole and sides are precision lapped to within 0.003" over the entire length of the sole. Overall length is 14 inches long and 2-1/2 inches wide. Weight is 4.6 pounds. The blade is adjusted forward/back via the solid brass rear adjustment knob. The 3/16 inch thick by 2 inch wide tool steel iron is hardened and tempered to 60-65 Rockwell C. Blade is ground at 25 degrees. The mouth opening can be easily adjusted for both fine and coarse work. This plane has good mass to reduce chatter and stay in the cut. Bed angle is 12 degrees.

The 0.125 inch thick and 2-3/8 inch wide tool steel iron is hardened and tempered to 55-60 Rockwell C. This plane has appropriate mass and weighs in at at 7.86 pounds. The frog can be adjusted forward and back. The lever cap is made from plated cast iron. Cap iron screws and adjusting wheels are made from polished brass. The yoke is a solid one piece casting. Our new Version 3 bench planes are still based on the reliable Bedrock design and feature heavy, stress –relieved ductile iron castings, fully machined adjustable frogs and high carbon steel blades but we took the opportunity between manufacturing runs to do a critical review and make a few improvements. We’ve changed the shape of the rear tote and increased the diameter of the blade adjustment wheel to make advancing the blade a bit easier. We improved the lateral adjustment lever and added a traditional style bearing for better control of the blade. We’ve made numerous changes to the castings that result in better “feedback” and a solid feel to the user. Working closely with our own manufacturer, we’ve continued to make improvements in machining, finish and functionality which we feel have yielded hand planes that are meant to be used and offer an extraordinary value. Tools require minimal tune-up prior to use.An all-purpose plane, the No. 5, or jack, plane will perform almost any job you might need done, while providing you with experience and feed back to help you pick your next plane.
